Arequipa

November 1998

Trip Rating: 4/5

Arequipa, Peru is in the south of Peru at an altitude of 7,600 feet.     Named the "White City"  because most of its buildings were  made from the white lava of the nearby volcano Misti.      It is said that Arequipa is another country, and in fact you can buy "Arequipan Passport"  at most stores.    While not real, it is a good joke.  Arequipa really is different than most other places in Peru.    I actually found myself saying "I could live here!" to myself several times.     That is something that didn't happen too many times in my year in Peru.   Arequipa really is a beautiful city.     Most views are framed by the larger than life volcano Misti.    There are several things that one cannot miss in Arequipa.     First the convent Santa Catalina is very interesting.   Built in 1580, it is still in use today by a cloister of about 20 nuns.    Second the mummy "Juanita" across the street is also very interesting.     I don't have pics of here, but  I will put the website here soon.
